The engine blew a head gasket. Also need a new ignition switch. Here's the story. I was sitting at red light when it just died, I figured no big deal it's done this before I'll just start it up and go. Well I started it and it ran like a dogs ass, limped it to AutoZone when I noticed smoke coming from the hood. So I shut it off for a while, turned it back on and it keeped backfiring through the intake. I had it towed to a shop and that's when they diagnosed it as headgasket and ingnition switch. They won't be able to get to it for a couple of days though. Sad So I'll see what happends.

Are they sure its the head gasket? They hardly ever fail on these cars. Either way, something is busted and that sucks.

I'm with iffy on this one. Be sure its not an intake gasket, very rare to see a head gasket, but anything is possible...

^ I'll have to agree,i rarely ever hear of any GM V6's blowing head gaskets.

My brother had a '96 Lumina w/ a 3.1L and only had to replace the LIM gasket. That car had crazy miles on it too....

I have had other friends who have had GM cars/trucks/SUV's with the 2.8,3.1,3.4,3.8,4.3L V6 motors and never had a head gasket issue....

However in your case MAYBE it is the issue,IDK....

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

P.S. Don't run grammy's GT to hard Laughing

Head gaskets were sometimes an issue with the LA1-equipped Grand Ams. Not nearly the same level issue as the LIM gaskets, though.

That being said, the issue I had with the 2002 GA SE was the infamous LIM gasket. Coolant had been disappearing, or leaking from somewhere. My engine starting knocking real loud, and I thought it was a tapping lifter, so I didn't worry much. Found a used set of lifters and eventually got them installed. Didn't fix the issue. Found out coolant had gotten into the oil, and toasted a couple of main bearings.

Mechanic said he was amazed of a few things -
1) It was only making as much noise as it was.
2) It had lasted as long as it did.
3) It hadn't ALREADY chucked a rod out the side of the block.

Anyways, I digress. I would make sure the mechanic changes the LIM and UIM gaskets, too, since he'll be going all the way into the engine to get the head gaskets.

I agree with you guys on saying the headgaskets are rare to fail, but like all internal combustion engines, their prone to fail at some point. I was just hoping longer than 95,000 miles. Rolling Eyes

I would, but money is tight right now. Plus I'm not sure if they were replaced before with the upgraded gaskets.

It was my understanding that you don't reuse the LIM gasket when you remove the LIM... am I mistaken?

To be honest, I'm sure Iffy. I've never done it before and I don't know alot about that stuff.

If the mechanic doesnt replace the LIM & UIM gaskets when he does the head gaskets, he would never touch one of my cars again!

We were on vacation last year getting married when we blew the head gasket in the 3400 equipped vehicle we were driving. It let loose between the #1 and #3 cylinder. Prior to this i had never seen a head gasket fail on a GM 60 degree v6. I was able to do it all myself in a couple afternoons but what a way to spend a honeymoon! Confused I dont let anyone work on my vehicles tho.. I just dont trust 'em.

Unfortunatly I don't have time to do it myself. I have a alot to do this week, and need the car to do these. So that's why I'm having someone else do it. The engine looks complicated too begin with. I would really know where to start.
