Hello guys!

I'm new here.
Basically I'm looking for buying advice Embarassed

Currently I'm looking to buy 03-04 or 2005 Impala and I have some questions:

1. 3.4L or 3.8L engine, which one is more reliable?
Performance is not my main preference, since its just going to be my daily driver. Somehow here in Toronto we have tons of 3.4 for sale and 3.8 kinda rare.

2. What obvious things (for Impala) which can go wrong should I look after while test driving?

Any other advice?

p.s. I'm mechanically inclined person.

Thanks! Razz

GM supposedly fixed the intake gaskets on the 3400 in 04. My 3400 MC was at 105k miles before I gave it to my mom. The only thing I ever had to replace was a water pump.

The 3800 is easier to repair because of its similarities to the small block v8.

Either car should be reliable as long as you keep it well maintained.

Speaking from the 3.8 view, very reliable thus far. You'll hear a lot about it being pretty much bullet proof.

I really can't say anything out the 3.4 because I have never owned one. But my guess is that it's pretty similar.

Both are reliable, but the impala ls have more features than the base impala, like the rims, console shift and tachometer. My uncle used to own a buick regal with the 3.8 he drove the car nearly 270K miles without an issue.

both very reliable as long as the LIM isn't blown. most of the time it is. take off the oil filler cap and look inside the cap itself. for white stuff. white goo in oil filler cap=bad Lower Intake Manifold Gasket. On a 3.4 i would ask about the thermostat being replaced just for future maintenance reasons. those are a PITA if needed done in the future.

hope i helped

Both engines are fairly reliable. Both will have IM issues unless it's been resolved through a redesigned gasket. As WL said, the 3400 had a factory redesign on later models, the 3800 will only have a redesigned UIM if it's been replaced aftermarket.

3800 has a more accessible thermostat, and that is a semi-common part to fail. Some maintenance jobs are easier on one than the other, so mostly a wash. Any other issues will be the same for both. Wheel hubs, strut mounts, BCM, signal relay, window switches, etc... apply to both as items that can fail over time.

If there's more 3400's in your area, you'll most likely be able to get a better deal on a well equipped one of those, so I'd say go that way unless you really want the 3800.

It's a gem

On topic: here was a list of common problems I threw together in another thread. Some of these pertain only to the 3800, but it will give you an idea of what to look at.

IffyG wrote:

1) LIM gasket failure
2) EGR stack melting UIM
3) Transmission cooler lines leaking at the crimps
4) Crankshaft position sensor failures
5) Leaking valve cover gaskets
6) Multifunction switch
7) Catalytic converter failure (depending on year)
8) Blower motor resistor failure
9) Warped rotors
10) Passlock

I could probably rattle of a few more if I thought about it.

(for reference I've had to deal with 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on my Monte Carlo)
