Hows it going guys? Im in the process of buying a 00-05 Impala. Ive come across two Impalas that I like, and they are vitually the same. Except one is an 05 base model, and one is a 03 LS. Instead of me explaining all the details on each, I will just post the ads for them from autotrader. But I have a couple questions.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/.....dard=false

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/.....dard=false

As you can see the 03 lists a lot more features than the 05, more than likely will the same features be on the 05, or is it because the 03 is an LS? What are the big differences between the base model, and the LS model? Any big differences between an 03 and 05?

The 05 seems to look a bit cleaner, but it also has 110k miles on it, would you consider that a lot for an 05? Which would you all choose? And is there anything I should be aware of with both cars?
Thanks

the LS came standard with a 3800, the base had a 3400 with a 3800 option
if you want to mod, go LS hands down. either way, I would make sure that you get a 3800. If it was my choice, it would be the LS.

now...things to look out for... coolant leaking into the oil - caused by a bad lower intake manifold gasket - 99% of 3800 and 3400 will have this problem. Check the oil for coolant, and coolant for oil. also check around the LIM for leaks. even if you can't see a leak, there is a good chance it's leaking internally (like mine was)

both of these cars will need a LIM gasket replacement if they haven't had one already. Mine came in around 85k miles. I believe Sabrewings had a LIM gasket failure at 40k-ish ? maybe 50k --- some people have gone way over 100k with no problems, however.

Even though the LS is the older of the 2, I would go with that. The 3800 engine is built to last.

The prices seems a bit steep on both Impalas. I got my 02 LS about a year ago for $5900 with 59k miles.

But if I had to chose between the two I would go with the '03 LS

Thanks for the quick replies, I will look for all those things, and I will ask if the LIM gasket has been replaced. Do you remember the cost of getting it replaced?

I thought these prices were a little expensive for impalas with this amount of miles. Since these are at dealerships, I will see if I can negotiate a price. If you all had to guess what would be a fair price for the 03 LS?

I am planning on going to the dealership with the LS to take a look at it.

Man, Im so glad I found an Impala forum.

I have heard qoutes from anywhere between $600 to $1200
Myself and another member here did mine for about $200 in parts + pizza and beer. We spent all day doing it... from Noon to 11PM, but we took it slow, ran to the store before getting started, labeled connectors, etc. We also degreased and cleaned up all of the engine parts which took a few hours. add on time to chomp down pizza and throw back a few smithwicks, and it took 11 hours. You can get it done in about 6-8, though.

here is the write-up we used, so you can get a general idea of what's involved.

In Nashville, I was charged 800 for the LIM gasket plus another 200 for an UIM because the EGR had melted it...

Go for the LS. The differences in the suspension and steering from a base model make it feel like a different car.

3.8 is different - i spent more than that on just the gaskets... also had to get injector o-rings, arp, mobile 1, coolant, etc.

Thanks for that write up, Im you mentioned the LIM gasket, I am definatly going to have to find out if its been replaced. As of right now, I am leaning toward the 03 LS, but it all depends on if theyre willing to work with me on the price or not.

with those miles, it wouldnt hurt to go in low on the price. All they can say is no.
Tell them you'll give $4900 for it. I think that would be a fair enough price as long as it doesnt have any major problems. Start there and see where that gets you and work your way up. But I dont think Id give them full asking price.

I wouldnt say 99%, seeing as I avoided this twice and most of the horror stories I hear are on the forums, not in person.
