I was googling to find out ~ how much money dexcool was (no answer btw) and found a couple sites discussing how it ruins a piece of plastic and such... So, should i continue with Dexcool or go w/ O'Reiley's brand or the like?

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with Dexcool. So long as you are checking your coolant regularly it won't be a problem. The 'dexcool' problems were due to flawed gasket designs in several engines. Unfortunately for us... the LA1, L36 and L67 happened to be engines that got bad gaskets. The newer gaskets have been redesigned and should not be prone to the same failure.

For a good read on the issue check out this thread: http://www.naioa.com/v2/module.....mp;t=20475

I've heard the arguments - up, down, left and right, all over the place - and nothing has convinced me to stop running Dex. The '97 Olds Cutlass we sold last spring had Dexcool in it from the day it was manufactured up to when we sold it with 198k miles on it. I've seen it recently, so it's still running.

It did develop an intake leak at some point, which some will argue was probably caused by Dex, but the 3.1L in my '92 Lumina also developed an intake leak. I think that has more to do with the dissimilar metals in those engines (aluminum and iron expanding and contracting separately) and gasket designs. I actually always thought I probably didn't help matters when I washed the engines at the car wash - hot engine + cooler water = metals shrinking rapidly.

AFAIK, the big caveat is making sure the system stays in good condition, since it is apparently the introduction of air that causes Dexcool to turn into garbage. Thus, any leaks much be fixed ASAP. Another option is to use a universal high mileage coolant, which is what I put into the Cutlass just before I sold it (water pump failed, hose leaked, and overflow cap leaked, and it took a week and lots of coolant to figure out that 3 things were leaking).

If you do switch, it is extremely important to get all the Dex out before replacing with the good old green stuff. If there is anything worse than air for Dexcool, it is ethylene glycol. I would recommend against switching.

True GM Dexcool runs anywhere from $15, up to whatever the dealer wants to sell it for. GM has no price stucture for maintenance parts like that. I sell it for $18 to local customers, so look to spend around that.

The current DexCool is the same as silicate free Prestone (or any other antifreeze)

The problem with that stuff is that is turns brown alot fast than the GM stuff. We tried using that a while back to save the customer money, and the coolant looks dirtier much sooner if running straight Prestone. Topping off is OK, but just something we noticed. Laughing

Is there a certain kind of Dex that you need to use? or is it all the same and/or doesn't matter?

I'm at 90K with no problems, had it changed at a Gm dealer when I first got the car at around 40K. Not sure on the validity of this, but weren't ginger pellets added by the dealer off the line? Would they need to be added everytime you change?
