PostPosted: Mon Feb 02, 2009 4:38 am    Post subject: Beark ! Squeak while turning? Reply with quote

Hey everyone... This just started a week ago, and none of the mechanics around here have led me to a valid explanation of the cause. When I turn my steering wheel to the left I hear a noise that resembles a wet sneaker on the floor... At first I suspected the rubber from the tire was rubbing on something. I had a thorough front end inspection at two garages, and everything checked out OK. The tie rods, ball joints etc were fine...

Does anyone know what is causing this, and is there a simple fix if so?

I hear this same noise, it's coming from my steering column. It will be at my dealer soon for it.

You guys talking about the high-pitched squeal coming from the steering wheel area inside the cabin? Mine has done this too...maybe 25,000mi. They "lubed the horn ring" when I complained about it, but the noise was back by the time I backed into my driveway. I don't even hear it anymore, though...but I bet my passengers might. Rolling Eyes

I used to notice it when turning the wheel during low-speed maneuvers, especially when I am moving slowly.

+1 for the steering wheel squeak. Stupid ISS has been bothering me recently too...but I'm not sure I want to the hassle of getting it replaced.

Hey guys, first post here, and i just had to comment this. This sounds like an intermediate steering problem that most new impalas have. Most dealers will fix this at no cost. It isn't a recall because it is nothing serious, just something that annoys most chevy consumers. If the dealer gives you a hard time about it, just tell them you will go to (so and so), and they will fix it free, and you will give them all of your future business! Shocked
Good day,
Tom

This particular sound is unrelated to the ISS. I had the ISS lubed at the same time as this squeak was diagnosed, and while the ISS clunking and sounds went away, the squeak did not.

wouldn't the strut mount be audible from the outside as well though? This noise can only be heard from inside the car

Ya ive got the same thing going on, but it took me awhile to notice it. Maybe im deaf or you guys got better hearing but i didnt hear it till i was driving through a parking lot real slow with the radio off and i cant hear it outside the car. Dont strut mounts create more of a clunk/bang sound? And again, wouldnt you hear that outside the car?

Mine does it too, but it's an 05 and not a 06+ Impala. Almost sounds like a zipper or something and it only happens at low speeds like pulling out of the driveway.

bahahaha! had the same squeakiness, pissed me off, looked right in front of where the hazards switch is, i cant recall exactly what it was that was sitting on top of two metal things, but if i lift the steering wheel it comes off of the knobs, and the squeak went away, went to walmart, white lithium grease spray, sprayed them, and its been months with no squeak lol.
