I was driving around today and noticed that the Onstar light was red in the rear view mirror. I called Onstar and they said it was due to a failed backup battery for the Onstar system.

I am guessing this has something to do with my car battery having been replaced.

Anybody have this happen or know anything about this backup battery? I guess I have to take it to the dealer.

My 06 Monte had to have the cars' battery replaced, onstar light went red, dealer replaced the onstar battery. Everything is ok since.

I have an appointment for my onstar battery backup to be replaced next week. Seems to be quite the common occurence.

So, you change your battery and the onstar battery goes bad?

WTF is up with new batteries going bad? That's not happy news.
It seems it wouldn't be too hard to rig up a 9V rechargable to temporarily back up the onstar.
I saw a little doohickey in one of the Christmas car catalogues which actually is a 9V hooked up to a cigarette lighter plug which is supposed to maintain settings when the battery is replaced.

The dealer told me that the Onstar battery is on backorder, so it may be a somewhat common problem.

Yes it is, but it took them like 8 working days to get it in. Took approximately 2 mins to put in. No more nasty red light for me Smile

No, it will happen anytime you cycle power. . . its not a rechargeable battery like your car battery. If you drain it, its done. Mine would actually turn onstar light green after driving like it was kind of recharging, but after i cycled car power it would turn red again. . . It is supposed to work this way, can't wait until my ONstar subscription is done and those lights turn off completely Smile
